On Monday, Nov. 14, the Friday Institute held a ceremony at its home on NC State’s Centennial Campus for the first time in four years to honor both an education researcher and practitioner who were selected to receive its Friday Medal.

For the first time since 2017, the William & Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation at N.C. State’s College of Education recognized multiple honorees for its Friday Medal.

The Friday Institute’s Program Evaluation and Education Research Group, in partnership with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) at Duke University, has begun a qualitative research study of summer programs designed to mitigate the impacts of COVID on at-risk students.

The LASER Institute, a professional development program for early and mid-career researchers, held its first in-person weeklong summer workshop July 11-15 at the Friday Institute to support its scholars in their professional development throughout the year. 

Researchers from the Friday Institute are supporting the development of a through-grade assessment system the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is piloting, the North Carolina Personalized Assessment Tool (NCPAT).

The Learning Analytics in STEM Education Research (LASER) Institute, founded by the Friday Institute, has selected its cohort of LASER Institute scholars for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Shaun Kellogg, the Friday Institute’s senior director of Program Evaluation and Education Research, will begin serving as the Friday Institute’s interim executive director June 1. To assist in the interim duties, NC State College of Education Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Education and Friday Institute Senior Faculty Fellow Hollylynne Lee will serve as interim associate dean, Friday Institute, College of Education.

In 2020, the PEER Group launched an internship program for undergraduate students that allowed student interns to receive training in leadership, educational research and evaluation techniques while contributing to PEER Group projects.

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded an $8 million grant to a partnership team from the Friday Institute, The ASSISTments Foundation, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and WestEd to support learning acceleration and recovery from COVID-related learning-loss among K-12 students.
