FLECKS: Fostering Collaborative Computer Science Learning with Intelligent Virtual Companions for Upper Elementary Students

FLECKS is a design-based research project that is guided by the input of teachers and students with the ultimate objective of developing a digital learning environment that fosters student collaboration in programming activities with virtual learning companions. The project addresses a lack of opportunities for elementary students to learn computer science practices and sound collaboration skills.  Through the four-year development cycle, the project will afford more than 400 students in North Carolina and Florida with highly diverse student populations the opportunity to engage in collaborative computer science learning experiences. Our development work includes regions with highly diverse student populations to ensure that the system is effective for all student groups, in particular those who are underrepresented in STEM and computer science disciplines.
