AP Computer Science Principles for High School

Are you interested in increasing opportunities for high school students to explore computer science? Looking for something with a broader curriculum than AP Computer Science A? The College Board has recently launched a new course that may just be the course for you: AP Computer Science Principles. Designed to be far more than a traditional introduction to programming, this is an engaging and approachable course that explores many of the big, foundational ideas of computing so that all students understand how these concepts are transforming the world in which we live. The Friday Institute is offering professional development to support this new course, utilizing two of the most popular curricula.

Code.org Professional Learning Program

As North Carolina’s regional partner for Code.org, The Friday Institute offers a program for teachers who are planning to implement Code.org computer science curricula. The professional learning program is an intensive, highly supportive program designed to prepare educators who have not necessarily taught or studied computer science previously to provide high quality instruction. The program includes:

  • A five-day summer workshop, which will fully prepare educators to utilize Code.org curricula and teacher support systems.
  • Four one-day Saturday workshops during the school year when teachers will reconvene for ongoing training and just-in-time support.
  • Additional opportunities for online and face-to-face networking and collaboration with peers and industry professionals throughout the year.

Due to the current social distancing guidelines, we have decided that the five-day summer workshops will now be held virtually with a blend of synchronous online classes and asynchronous activities.

Virtual Program Dates:

  • July 20-24
  • July 27-31

The virtual program will address all the learning outcomes of the face-to-face five-day workshop. The virtual program workshop will be conducted during the five-day workweek. Each workshop day will kick-off with a synchronous session in the morning followed by an asynchronous (flexible) session over a prolonged lunch period. The afternoon will resume with a synchronous session followed by a final asynchronous session. The expectation is for approximately 35 working hours.

For North Carolina teachers, the cost of the program is $1,500 per teacher. That’s 50% off the national cost thanks to our generous supporters: NC State University and Code.org. The program fee covers the full year-long program including your teaching materials, workshop supplies, 9 days of professional development, your meals during workshops, and a stipend for teachers completing the program. Additional travel costs are not covered.

We have limited scholarships, and we are actively pursuing more funds for scholarships to support teachers! There is a section in the application for you to indicate interest in or need for scholarship support.

Beauty and Joy of Computing AP CS Principles Summer Workshop

The Friday Institute is working with the Beauty and Joy of Computing (BJC) team to offer professional development. The Beauty and Joy of Computing emphasizes the joy and complexity of creating visual computer programs and apps, balanced with critical reflection on both the potential benefits and harms of new computing technologies. NCSU is hosting a BJC PD on Centennial Campus in Raleigh, NC during the week of June 22- 26, 2020.

CS Discoveries for Middle Grades

Code.org Professional Learning Program

Computer Science Discoveries is a full-year introductory computer science survey course (can be implemented as two standalone semesters) for middle schools using Code.org curriculum. The course takes a wide lens on computer science by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, HTML/CSS, and data. Students are empowered to create authentic artifacts and engage with CS as a medium for creativity, communication, problem solving, and fun. The program includes:

  • A five-day summer workshop, which will fully prepare educators to utilize Code.org curricula and teacher support systems.

CSD Massive Open Online Course for Educators (MOOC-Ed)!

The CSD Massive Open Online Course for Educators (MOOC-Ed) is designed to be used in either of two ways: in conjunction with the five-day, face-to-face professional development workshop that is offered each summer (described above) or as a stand-alone experience for teachers who have not attended a workshop. Though both experiences have similar goals, the face-to-face workshop uses role-play to actively explore and experiment with pedagogical techniques. In the online course, the focus is a deeper dive into content to bolster educators’ computer science understanding and into the pedagogy underpinning the course.

This course teaches participants how to:

  • Understand the CSD curriculum content and pedagogy
  • Prepare to implement a student inquiry-based approach in your classroom
  • Model effective learning practices for students through the lead learner model
  • Develop a broad view of computer science to inform your teaching
  • Understand CSD pedagogy and how to apply it in your classroom
  • Become part of a network of educators who are doing similar work; develop a community of practice

CS Fundamentals for Elementary Grades

Code.org Professional Learning Program

Elementary school teachers can sign up for a free, high-quality professional development workshop from an experienced computer science facilitator. The workshop will provide an intro to computer science, pedagogy, overview of the online curriculum, teacher dashboard, and strategies for teaching “unplugged” classroom activities. Workshops last 6-7 hours and will prepare you to teach the Code Studio courses for grades K-5. Teachers can search for scheduled workshops at https://code.org/professional-development-workshops.

We are recruiting middle and high school teachers willing to learn and implement new and innovative pedagogies for infusing computer science into their content areas. We are looking for individual teachers, as well as interdisciplinary, school-based teams of 3-4 teachers from NC and SC to attend the PD. Ideally, we are looking for teachers who do not solely teach computer science but are interested in integrating it into their content. Stipend, food, and travel funds will be provided.

edcampCode: Beyond the Hour of Code Workshops for All Teachers

Have you or your school hosted an Hour of Code? Are you looking to do more with coding in your class? You are not alone. In North Carolina, more than 5,000 teachers and 200,000 students have participated in Hour of Code activities. Many teachers and students are interested in bringing more opportunities to code and learn about computer science to their classrooms.

During these free workshops, teachers can:

  • Develop core computational thinking and computer science skills.
  • Explore hands-on activities leveraging these skills.
  • Discuss opportunities and strategies for integrating computational thinking and coding into their courses.
  • Create and share curricular activities for their classes through guided work.

An edcamp is a user-generated conference – commonly referred to as an “unconference”. Edcamps are designed to provide participant-driven professional development for K-12 educators.
