Background Information | Caminos: Building Pathways with Latinx Educators

North Carolina’s Latinx population has increased from 75,000 in 1990 to just over one million in 2019. Over the past decade, Latinx enrollment in public schools in North Carolina has risen by 307 percent, while almost all other racial/ethic groups experienced minor increases or even decreased enrollment (Carolina Demography). Educator demographics in North Carolina have not followed this trend. The majority of NC educators (70%) are White. For all districts across the state, there is only 1 Latinx teacher for every 109 Latinx students (WRAL). The gap in principal diversity is even more pronounced. Increasing the cultural, racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of the educator workforce is an urgent need in North Carolina.
