The Literacy and Community Initiative Hosts Inaugural Reading Celebration

On March 29, 2019, the Literacy and Community Initiative hosted their first reading celebration at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. Youth from Triangle Literacy Council’s Bull City YouthBuild and the Juntos program (the Juntos Hispanic Literacy Group) shared their narratives from three of their published books: Strong and Unbroken, Blueprints: Rebuilding Lives and Redesigning Futures, and The Roots of Our People: From One World to Another–Juntos. Watch the entire event in the video above.

The Literacy and Community Initiative (LCI) is a collaboration among NC State’s College of Education’s Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences, the Friday Institute and community-based organizations. The purpose of this initiative is to investigate and promote the power of voice among historically underserved students by supporting literacy learning in educational community-based organizations (CBOs). The LCI assesses the needs of youth by supporting the publication of student-authored narratives and sharing their experiences with multiple educational and political stakeholders.
