Dr. Chris Dede Receives Friday Medal

Chris Dede lectures about the future of education after receiving the Friday Medal.

NC State University’s College of Education and the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation honored Chris Dede, Ed.D. at its annual Friday Medal Presentation on November 11. An international expert in learning technologies and related policies, Dr. Dede’s research includes focusing on emerging technologies for learning and incorporating technology into educational improvement initiatives.

“In the early 21st century, we find ourselves confronted with economical challenges and educational challenges,” Dede said.

He went on to speak about the future of technologies in education and the emerging model of educational transformation.

“We know that many students leave education with high grades and high test scores and every measure of success, but then get out into life and struggle because success in school doesn’t necessarily prepare you for success in life” Dede said. “Students take success in the classroom, which is a very abstract and limited set of knowledge, and carry it out to the real world. This problem can be aided by situated learning.”

The award’s namesake, William Friday, spoke at the event, in praise of Dr. Dede and Interim Chancellor Jim Woodward highlighted the importance of the College of Education and education’s role in society. Interim Dean of the College of Education, Jose Picart and Executive Director of the Friday Institute, Glenn Kleiman also provided brief remarks.

“I’m a little amazed by all of the compliments that I have been given,” Dede said. “It’s just an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as Bill Friday. It’s an inspiration to keep working, striving, and trying to make a difference.”

The Friday Medal was presented by the College of Education and Friday Institute for Educational Innovation to Dr. Dede for his continuing commitment to improving education around the world. The medal is awarded annually to a leader with significant, distinguished and enduring contributions in education who embodies the mission and spirit of the William & Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation. The ceremony is the highlight of the American Education Week in the College of Education.
