Wednesday November 14, 2012 | 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM | Friday Institute, Wachovia Innovation Hall

The Friday Medal honors significant, distinguished and enduring contributions to education and beyond through advocating innovation, advancing education and imparting inspiration. In recognition of the commitment of Bill and Ida Friday to educational excellence, the College of Education’s William & Ida Friday Institute for Educational Innovation created The Friday Medal. This award is given annually to those who embody the mission and spirit of the Friday Institute.

The 2012 Friday Medal will be awarded to Dr. David Rose, Founder and Chief Education Officer, CAST (The Center for Applied Special Technology) and Lecturer on Education, Harvard University. Dr. Rose’s work on universal design for learning focuses on providing effective education for all students, a goal that was at the center of Mr. Friday’s life.

Dr. David Rose is a developmental neuropsychologist and educator whose primary focus is on the development of new technologies for learning. In 1984, Dr. Rose co-founded CAST, a not-for-profit research and development organization whose mission is to improve education, for all learners, through innovative uses of modern multimedia technology and contemporary research in the cognitive neurosciences. That work has grown into the field called Universal Design for Learning which now influences educational policy and practice throughout the United States and beyond. Dr. Rose also teaches at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education where he has been on the faculty for more than 25 years.

Dr. Rose is the author of several scholarly books, numerous award-winning educational technologies, and dozens of chapters and research journal articles. He has been the principal investigator on grants and contracts from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and many private foundations. The U.S. Department of Education recently appointed him to serve as one of the developers of the National Educational Technology Plan. Dr. Rose has won many awards, including recently being honored at the White House as a “Champion of Change.” Dr. Rose holds a B.A. in psychology from Harvard College, a master’s in teaching from Reed College, and a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
