The Stories We Tell: Math, Race, Bias, and Opportunity

Join this Friday Institute discussion led by Valerie Faulkner, Ph.D., on the ways in which early identification of ‘talent’ and decision-making processes is marred by biases, spoken and unspoken, that combine to justify the idea of an ‘achievement gap’ in mathematical performance. Using her newly released book co-authored with NC State College of Education colleagues Patricia Marshall and Lee Stiff as a starting point, Faulkner will explore how professional decision making and a more precise use of data can impact mathematical performance outcomes.
