Friday Institute Cross-Talk: The Literacy and Community Initiative (LCI): Write, Engage and Lead

Friday Institute crosstalk sessions give its internal teams an opportunity to briefly share a portion of their work and stimulate discussion across all teams at the Friday Institute and College of Education to further collaborations, introduce new concepts, address research design problems and more. This month, the Wake Promise Team and TELS researchers will present an overview of the Literacy and Community Initiative (LCI).  The LCI seeks to investigate and promote the power of voice among historically underserved students by supporting literacy learning, the publication of student-authored narratives, and sharing of their life experiences with multiple community, educational and political stakeholders. The attendees will be invited to review the program’s theory of change and engage with the presenters in a conversation about future research and possible classroom applications. The potential for the LCI program to promote leadership development, advocacy and social justice will also be explored. RSVP to Marjorie Santoro at
