PRESENTATIONS
Graphically-Enhanced Elementary Science: Graphics and inquiry-based scienceThe purpose of this work is to investigate the efficacy of science notebooks as a vehicle for evidence of inquiry practices in elementary classrooms. Given the logistical challenges of direct classroom observation and the indirect nature of surveys, interviews and similar approaches, student work—as recorded in science notebooks—potentially provides powerful evidence of inquiry practices. Of particular interest are the graphic representations created by students in the different stages of the inquiry cycle. This study reports on testing an approach to graphic analysis as a vehicle for evaluating outcomes of science activities in grades 2-5 classrooms.
