Cisco Systems/Friday Institute Overview
Quote on Partnership
“Access to curriculum enhancing content and classroom management tools should not be limited on the basis of geography or economy. Cisco’s vision for education is that the Internet is an equalizer, allowing ubiquitous access to content that will enhance learning and achievement,” said Ed Paradise, Cisco Research Triangle Park Site Executive. “Cisco’s partnership with the Friday Institute and North Carolina State University is a step in realizing this vision of universal access in education.”
Overview of collaboration:
In order to fully participate in the exciting changes occurring in education, schools must connect within each district, state, region, and country and to the world outside of education. Cisco provides the foundation for the Friday Institute’s technology initiatives through a high-speed wired and wireless networking infrastructure that enables access and content distribution at the Friday Institute and to teachers, students and others in schools throughout North Carolina.
The Cisco network infrastructure is state-of –the-art. It supports high-speed voice, video and data (rates up to 10 gigabits per second). The high-speed infrastructure enriches learning and enables collaboration. For example, activities that require robust network support including video-streaming technology used for live and prerecorded events and training programs, and computer visualization applications, can be shared among researchers, teachers, students, staff and guests at the Friday Institute, which is co-located with the Centennial Campus Middle School.
The Cisco network enables delivery of Internet-based services to teachers and students throughout North Carolina and beyond. The content delivery network and IP-based video solutions enable schools throughout the state to use learning resources at the Friday Institute and N.C. State University.
The comprehensive, intelligent network delivers multiple services over a single IP infrastructure, including wireless networking at the Institute, and other “intelligent” building services ranging from power through Ethernet to cameras to control of HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems.
