Feb. 2 Event to Focus on Women in Higher Education
Raleigh, N.C.
-- Faculty, researchers and administrators from across the Triangle will gather Feb. 2 at the McKimmon Center on the campus of
North Carolina State University to discuss the contributions and leadership of women in shaping the future of higher education.
Led by NCSU College of Education Dean Kay Moore and Assistant Vice Provost for Faculty and Staff Diversity
Marcia Gumpertz, the forum, titled "Transforming Higher Education: Building a Women's Agenda," will immediately follow the
Emerging Issues Forum from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.
The mini-conference will consist of a panel discussion followed by interactive agenda-building and a
reception. Panelists include female faculty and administrators from area universities, with students from NC State's Women in
Science and Engineering program and Wolfpack Women in Science sharing posters of their research.
"This is an exciting opportunity for everyone associated with higher education," Moore said. "We have some
of the leading women in their fields participating, and the knowledge and insight gained will be useful in planning initiatives
for women across our campuses."
Moore will head the panel, which includes: Jacqueline Krim, professor of physics at NC State; Kristina
Johnson, Duke University dean of engineering; Nancy Allen, M.D., vice provost of faculty diversity and faculty development at
Duke; Laurie McNeil, chair, Department of Physics and Astronomy at UNC-Chapel Hill; and Diane Kjervik, division I chair of the
School of Nursing and first director of the Women's Center at UNC-Chapel Hill. Gumpertz will direct the interactive
agenda-building session which follows the panel discussion at 4:30 p.m. The mini-conference is free and open to the public.
"We envision this event as a way to find out about women's initiatives on area campuses, to showcase local
female academic scientists, and to gather information about the emerging issues for women and higher education," Gumpertz said.
Information from this event will feed into a workshop on institutional transformation for NCSU deans and
department heads planned for Feb. 28. The institutional transformation workshop will feature Dr. Sue V. Rosser, dean of Georgia
Tech's Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. Details about Dr. Rosser's visit will be announced soon.
The Transforming Higher Education: Building a Women's Agenda mini-conference is sponsored by the colleges
of NCSU, the Office for Diversity and African American Affairs and the Provost's Office.
