This National Workshop on Stimulating and Sustaining Excitement and Discovery in K-12 Education is the first in a projected series designed to coalesce experts from academia, industry, and government in the area of K-12 STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education to map out a strategy for institutionalizing and sustaining a world-class K-12 STEM educational system.

NC 1-1 Learning Collaborative
The NC 1-1 Learning Collaborative is designed to support K-12 schools and districts that are implementing programs in which every student and teacher has a laptop computer, desktop computer, or other computing device, with ready access to the internet. Leadership teams from North Carolina schools that are implementing or planning a 1-1 technology initiative are invited to attend the initial meeting of the NC 1-1 Learning Collaborative, which will be held on September 14, 2007 at the Friday Institute on the NCSU Centennial Campus.

Policy and Action Series, “Leandro, No Child Left Behind”
Robb Leandro, the namesake of a lawsuit filed against the State of North Carolina calling for more funding for low-income school districts, will join U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge, N.C. Superior Court Judge Howard Manning Jr., Assistant Secretary of Education Raymond Simon, North Carolina school superintendents and other educational leaders to discuss the impact of the lawsuit and the No Child Left Behind legislation on the state’s public schools.

Theory, Research and Action for Educational Change.” Dr. Denis Gray, a professor in NC State’s Department of Psychology, will discuss innovation processes in education, and Michael Brader-Araje, founding member of DonorsChoose NC and a member of the Friday Institute’s National Advisory Board, will present DonorsChoose as an example of a social innovation that has changed the formula for how teachers acquire funding for classroom projects.
