Leading Innovation: Implementing Effective 1:1 Computing Programs

Overview
The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, and the North Carolina 1:1 Learning Collaborative, is pleased to announce its second Leading Innovation Institute. This institute is designed to help school and district leaders implement effective programs in which 21st century teaching and learning is enhanced by a 1:1 ratio of students and computers. Institute participants will gain a deeper understanding of:
- The nature of 21st century teaching and learning in 1:1 environments;
- Preparing and supporting teachers to teach in a 21st century, 1:1 classroom;
- Providing a robust, reliable technology infrastructure and effective technical and instructional support; and
- Leading successful, sustainable innovations in schools and districts through involving teachers, parents, businesses, and communities.
Participants
District or school leadership teams that are planning or implementing 1:1 learning technology initiatives for students and teachers (3-5 people per team). Teams should include: superintendents, principals, curriculum directors, technology directors, media specialists, lead teachers, or others who are key actors in the innovation process. Teams will be selected through an application process.
Dates
Institute will start at 12:00pm Wednesday, July 8 and end at 3:00pm Friday July 10, 2009.
Location
Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC.
Cost/Fees
Funding for the Institute is provided by BB&T to support educational leadership development and Golden LEAF Foundation to further support 1:1 learning technology initiatives in NC. There will be no charge for the Institute, but individuals or their schools/districts will need to cover travel, housing, and dinner costs. Low-cost accommodations will be available through NC State University Housing.
Institute Activities
This will be an active working institute, in which each participant will both learn from others and share their own expertise. Institute activities will include:
- Mix of plenary, hands on, and content specific sessions;
- Opportunities to hear what works and what doesn’t from principals, superintendents and teacher leaders who are leading 1:1 computing programs;
- Experiencing what teaching and learning looks and feels like in a 1:1 computing classroom;
- Sessions on how to transform teaching and learning using 21st century resources; and
- Time for the school/district teams to work on their implementation plans.
