Synthesis of Rational Number Reasoning

Funded by the National Science Foundation

This project summarizes the research literature on rational number reasoning across five major strands: a) multiplication and division, b) ratio, proportion, and rate, c) decimals, percents, and fractions, d) similarity and scaling, and e) area and volume. During the course of the project, we are assembling a database of assessment items, and, through careful examination of the literature, identifying specific rational number reasoning learning trajectories. Project products—a literature database, summaries of individual literature items, and the assessment database--will all be available online to interested researchers and teachers.
