This project studies how kindergarten, first- and second-grade teachers develop new ways of teaching early number knowledge so that every child, particularly African American students, is successful. Researchers focus on fostering teachers’ understanding and use of children’s existing cultural and mathematical experiences as a basis for mastering key concepts and procedures. This five-year project will help close the race-related achievement gap and establish strong foundations for mathematics achievement in later grades.
