The Friday Institute is developing a portfolio of initiatives that address critical needs for education in the 21st century. While we expect our portfolio will quickly grow and evolve, the following describes our major initiatives as of the summer of 2007. While each initiative has a specific focus, we also carefully consider how our work across initiatives is related and fits together to help create future-ready schools.

Technology Infrastructures for K-12 schools
We are designing and testing new approaches to providing state-of-the-art technology infrastructures that support teaching, learning, and management in K-12 schools.  This work combines knowledge of the latest technological approaches to providing cost-effective, reliable technologies with a deep understanding of the needs of K-12 schools in rural, suburban, and urban areas.

Associated Projects:

- NC Connectivity Program

- Virtual Computing Initiative

Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century
We are developing, evaluating, and disseminating innovative approaches to teaching and learning that are made possible by multi-media and networked technologies.  These approaches provide increased access to educational opportunities and resources, especially for students and teachers in rural areas, as well as new educational approaches that engage students in interactive, visual learning environments and provide diagnostic information to their teachers.

Leadership Development
In this initiative, we work with educational leaders at the state, district, and school levels to support their professional development and involve them in learning communities with peers and mentors.  Our leadership development programs combine face-to-face and online activities, giving the participants opportunities to experience educational uses of technology to support their own learning.

Associated Projects:
- NC 1-1 Learning Collaborative
- Innovation Leaders Academy

Evaluation of Educational Innovations
While many innovative ideas for improving education are emerging, only some will prove effective in increasing student achievement and feasible to implement on a large scale.  In this initiative, we conduct formative evaluations to improve the development of new educational resources as well as rigorous summative evaluations of innovative approaches to determine which really work in classrooms settings, engage students, and increase students’ learning of significant content.

Associated Projects:
- IMPACT
- Innovation Leaders Academy

Policies to Support Innovation
Well-designed local, state, and federal policies can guide schools to become more effective at preparing students for their lives in the 21st century.  However, poorly planned policies, or under-resourced implementations of policies, can work against schools moving forward.  In this initiative, we analyze educational policies and their implementations, provide information to decision makers, and advocate for effective policies to support educational innovation.
