Narrative-Centered Learning Environments

Dr. James C. Lester will discuss his research on Narrative-Centered Learning Environments. A key promise of narrative-centered learning environments is the ability to make learning engaging. However, there is concern that learning and engagement may be at odds in these game-based learning environments and traditional learning systems. This view suggests that, on the one hand, students interacting with a game-based learning environment may be engaged but unlikely to learn, while on the other hand, traditional learning technologies may promote deep learning but provide limited engagement.
Dr. Lester is Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Director of the Center for Educational Informatics at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on transforming education with technology-rich learning environments. Utilizing artificial intelligence, game technologies, and natural language processing, he designs, develops, and investigates next-generation learning technologies. His work on personalized learning ranges from game-based learning environments and intelligent tutoring systems to affective computing, computational models of narrative, and natural language tutorial dialogue. The adaptive learning environments he and his colleagues develop have been used by thousands of students in K-12 classrooms throughout the U.S.
This event is an installment of the FI Seminar Series. The FI Seminar Series showcases innovative work from FI research and engagement teams, as well as that of our partners in the College of Education, throughout NC State University, and across the nation. These seminars are an opportunity for informal presentation, discussion and engagement in our community, allowing us to increase collaboration and advance our work by learning from colleagues and peers. The FI Seminar Series is open to the public.
