Please join us for the next Brown Bag Seminar of the Fall semester. The seminar will be held on Wednesday, October 28 in the Collaboratory Commons at the Friday Institute on NC State's Centennial Campus. Refreshments will be served at 8:30am and the seminar will begin at 9:00am. Please feel free to bring colleagues and students along with you. Our guest will be Dr. John Lee, Associate Professor of Curriculum, Instruction and Counselor Education at NC State. His presentation is entitled "New Literacies and Online Historical Thinking."

Three decades of research on historical thinking have provided educators with a deep understanding about how experts and novices use authentic primary historical resources to develop knowledge in history. With the emergence of online historical resources, existing research on historical thinking needs to be updated. Using new research on middle grades students' online historical thinking, this presentation will highlight some of the new literacies needed to access and use online historical resources.

John Lee is an associate professor of social studies and middle grades education. He conducts research on digital history, and is specifically interested in the development of innovative ways for supporting teachers and students as they make use of online historical resources. He is also involved in efforts to theorize and develop tools and material related to new literacies.
