National Math Standards Meeting

Monday August 10, 2009 - Wednesday August 12, 2009 | 9:00 AM - 4:00 AM |

The Diagnostic E-Learning Trajectories Approach (DELTA) research group led by Dr. Jere Confrey and Dr. Alan Maloney, at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation in collaboration with the Center on Continuous Instructional Improvement of the Center for Policy, Research and Evaluation at Teacher’s College are hosting a national standards meeting.  This meeting will focus on how learning trajectories research can inform the development of an evidence-based Common Core Standards that is being developed under the auspices of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governor’s Association (NGA).

Forty-six states, including North Carolina, two territories, and the District of Columbia, have committed to develop these Common Core Standards. This meeting is being convened with a national group of researchers to consider what is currently known about learning trajectories in mathematics and the implications for developing additional standards that address what students need to learn in the earlier grades in order to meet the new core “job and college ready” standards by the end of secondary school.

This invitation-only meeting will be held from August 10-12, 2009 at the Friday Institute.  One outcome of the meeting will be a document that can be shared with standards writers in the hope of informing the development of the proposed grade level standards and their representation.  A focus will be on what is currently known about learning trajectories, how this literature can be shared effectively, and how to relate this knowledge to standards, their assessment, and instruction.
