The New Literacies Collaborative (NLC) is a multidisciplinary group of educators, students and researchers who promote research-based best practices that incorporate new literacies into the classroom.  The primary goal of NLC is to connect research and practice at the intersection of literacy, technology, and media.  The activities of the NLC include faculty collaborations on funded research projects and teacher professional development activities. Support provided by the Friday Institute, the Center for 21st Century Skills (NC Business Committee for Education)

About Our Speakers
DR. JULIE COIRO began her teaching career as a special education teacher after graduating from the University of Connecticut.  She has worked in both middle school and elementary school classrooms with students who have learning disabilities and emotional difficulties.  She received her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in Reading from the University of New Orleans.  After moving to northern California, Julie worked privately as a reading consultant and a computer teacher before becoming manager of Reading, Rhythm and ROM, a unique store providing computer software, quality children's literature, and technology support to families and teachers.  Upon returning to Connecticut, Julie worked as a technology specialist at LEARN, a regional educational agency, before pursuing her present position as a self-employed educational technology consultant.
Currently, Julie is an Assistant Professor in the School of Education at the University of Rhode Island.  Among her research interests are strategic reading comprehension instruction, new literacies of the Internet, online reading comprehension, and effective practices for technology integration and professional development.  Her research focuses on the changing nature of online reading comprehension and the implications these changes have for understanding effective literacy instruction, assessment, and professional development.

DR. ANGELA WISEMAN is an assistant professor of literacy education and teaches reading and language arts methods courses in the elementary education program here at North Carolina State University. Her research interests focus on two interrelated strands: (1) Understanding classroom practices that promote an expanded view of learning by bridging the gap between in and out of school literacies and focusing on student strengths and (2) Supporting in-service and pre-service teachers’ understanding of diversity in the classroom.

Dr. Wiseman’s teaching and research have been guided by the concepts of social justice and the importance of recognizing students’ funds of knowledge.
