The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation would like to announce the launch of its white paper series. The series is designed to further the mission of the Friday Institute by presenting expert opinions that begin conversations on topics related to transforming education.
There are currently two papers in the series. The first is entitled, Toward a New Learning Ecology: Teaching and Learning in 1:1 Environments. It describes the new environment for learning that exists in schools today and proposes five professional development strategies for teachers in 1:1 environments. The second paper in the series concerns how students in NC are being prepared for life and work in the 21st century and is entitled, Determining, Developing and Assessing the Capabilities of North Carolina’s Future-Ready Students.

Dr. Jere Confrey will deliver a plenary session entitled "Steering a Course for Preparing Students for the Mathematical Sciences in the 21st Century” at the Research on Undergraduate Mathematics Meeting at the Raleigh Marriott on Friday, February 28, 2009, at 1:30-2:30.
This talk will report on efforts here in North Carolina to revise state standards around learning trajectories and to focus on preparing all students for the Mathematical Sciences. She will argue that the high school math wars are failing to serve the needs of the 21st Century and that it is time to focus on preparation for the Mathematical Sciences more broadly, and move away from the narrow preparation for calculus only that has been the foundation of advanced math in our high school curriculum. A strategy for doing so, practically and politically, is outlined.
