eLearning: Anytime, Anyplace, Anyone
Last November North Carolina launched www.eLearningnc.gov, a new website that provides a one-stop-shop for any North Carolinian, from K-12 students to life-long learners, who wants to take advantage of online learning. Members of the eLearning Commission, including North Carolina State University educational specialists, met today at the Friday Institute for Education Innovation (FI).
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton spoke of the busy months ahead and commended the group, “we have tremendous leadership in the Commission, especially those who have been chosen to chair the subcommittees.” Included in the chairs are the FI’s Dr. Glenn Kleiman, Executive Director, and Phil Emer, Director of Technology.
Dr. Kleiman co-chairs the Teaching and Learning Subcommittee that is moving forward on a proposed plan to further the availability of online professional development in North Carolina. “We are committed to having great teachers in all classrooms and great principals in all schools in North Carolina and online professional development is essential to help prepare our educators for 21st century teaching and learning” said Kleiman.
Leading the Infrastructure Subcommittee as co-chair, Emer is analyzing and planning shared services that can serve all 115 North Carolina school districts through high-speed access to online content and services. “We are moving to a support model that looks more like a business enterprise, and will provide schools with more reliable and cost effective technology infrastructures and tools” said Emer.
The eLearning Commission is preparing a report to present to Governor Perdue and the General Assembly in December. This report will include recommendations on moving forward to grow North Carolina’s eLearning services, support and community.
