MSEN Awards Future STEM Leaders
NC State University’s NC-Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) Pre-College Program (PCP) celebrated its students in an awards ceremony last night. Over 100 awards were given out recognizing 6-12th grade students with a higher than 3.0 grade point average and outstanding work within the program.
“The MSEN program inspires students to learn and excel in the STEM areas,” says Braska Williams, NC State’s NC-MSEN PCP Coordinator. “This night always makes me proud to see so many of our students achieve high scholastic results.”
The evenings guest speaker was Arthur G. Affleck, J.D., Vice Chancellor for Institutional Advancement at Fayetteville State University, who spoke to the students about being inspired beyond everyone’s expectations, even their own. “You need a dream—to make a dream come true,” said Affleck.
The NC State NC-MSEN PCP prepares underserved students at the middle and high school levels (grades 6-12) to attend a 4-year college/university and for careers in education and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It currently serves approximately 400 students in Franklin, Granville, Johnston, Nash, and Wake Counties through year-round enrichment activities. The program partners with school districts to recruit students from underserved populations who have not been prepared to pursue college preparatory level mathematics and science-based courses.
