Joseph D. Moore Distingished Lecture Series is April 15
Dr. Roslyn Mickelson, professor of Sociology and Public Policy, Information Technology and Women's Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will speak at the Friday Institute Thursday, April 15, 2010 as part of the Joseph D. Moore Distinguished Lecture Series.
In her lecture, "The Effects of Integrated Schools on Student Achievement in Mathematics: A Research Synthesis," Dr. Roslyn Mickelson will discuss a comprehensive new synthesis of educational, behavioral ad social science research of the effects of schools' racial and socioeconomic composition on mathematics learning. Results of the synthesis indicate that students attending racially and socioeconomically integrated schools are likely to have higher mathematics outcomes. Her research addresses the importance of these studies in relation to current legal cases.
A panel of distinguished guests will comment on the presentation, including: JB Buxton, Principal, Education Innovation and Former Deputy State Superintendent of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction; Matty Lazo-Chadderton, Director, Hispanic/Latino Affairs, President Pro Tempore's Office, NC Senate; Benita Jones, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of North Carolina School of Law Center for Civil Rights; and Jere Confrey, Joseph D. Moore Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics Education, North Carolina State University.
