White Paper Series off to a Great Start

May 26, 2009 10:18 AM | Posted By: Chris Pfitzer

The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation would like to announce the launch of its white paper series.  The series is designed to further the mission of the Friday Institute by presenting expert opinions that begin conversations on topics related to transforming education.

There are currently two papers in the series.  The first is entitled, Toward a New Learning Ecology: Teaching and Learning in 1:1 Environments.  It describes the new environment for learning that exists in schools today and proposes five professional development strategies for teachers in 1:1 environments.  The second paper in the series concerns how students in NC are being prepared for life and work in the 21st century and is entitled, Determining, Developing and Assessing the Capabilities of North Carolina’s Future-Ready Students.

The first white paper was a collaborative effort among Friday Institute researchers who hold their academic appointments in the College of Education’s Departments of Curriculum & Instruction and Mathematics, Science, & Technology.  The authors are Drs. Hiller Spires, Eric Wiebe, Carl A. Young, Karen Hollebrands, and John K. Lee.  The second was written by Friday Institute Consultant, Dr. Chris Dede of Harvard University.

The mission of the Friday Institute is to advance education through innovation in teaching, learning, and leadership. Bringing together students, teachers, researchers, policy-makers, educational professionals, and other community members, the Friday Institute is a center for fostering collaboration to improve education.

As we progress into the 21st century, our work focuses on preparing students for success in work, life, and citizenry in the global, knowledge-based, technology-rich, culturally-diverse, rapidly changing world in which they will live. This task requires helping schools become future-oriented organizations that build upon their traditional strengths while updating curriculum content, teaching practices, management approaches, and technology tools to best serve the students of today and tomorrow.

The occasional series is available for download at www.fi.ncsu.edu/whitepapers.  Interested parties may also subscribe to the podcast of the series and receive each new edition as it is published.
