Overview
The Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, in partnership with the North Carolina 1:1 Learning Collaborative, is pleased to announce its first Leading Innovation institute. This institute is designed to help school and district leaders implement effective programs in which 21st century teaching and learning is enhanced by a 1:1 ratio of students and computers. Institute participants will gain a deeper understanding of:
- The nature of 21st century teaching and learning in 1:1 environments;
- Preparing and supporting teachers to teach in a 21st century, 1:1 classroom;
- Providing a robust, reliable technology infrastructure and effective technical and instructional support; and
- Leading successful, sustainable innovations in schools and districts through involving teachers, parents, businesses, and communities.
Participants
District or school leadership teams that are implementing or planning 1:1 learning programs for students and teachers (3-6 people per school). Teams should include: superintendents, principals, curriculum directors, technology directors, media specialists, lead teachers, or others who are key actors in the innovation process. Teams will be selected through an application process.
Dates
Institute will start at 12:00pm Tuesday, July 15 and end at 3:00pm Thursday July 17, 2008.
Location
Friday Institute for Educational Innovation, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC.
Cost/Fees
Funding for the Institute is provided by a generous gift from BB&T to support educational leadership development. Therefore, there will be no charge for the Institute, but individuals or their schools/districts will need to cover their own travel, housing, and food costs. Low-cost accommodations will be available through NC State University housing.
Institute Activities
This will be an active working institute, in which each participant will both learn from others and share their own expertise. National leaders in educational technology, including Chris Dede from Harvard, Pam Buffington and Barbara Treacy from Education Development Center, along with NCSU faculty (Tom Alsbury, John Lee, Hiller Spires, Andy Overstreet, Karen Hollebrands, Eric Wiebe and Glenn Kleiman) and educational leaders from North Carolina and other states, will contribute to institute activities. These will include:
- Pre-institute online survey and discussion;
- Presentations by teacher leaders about how they use 1:1 technology with their students and how it has changed the nature of teaching and learning in their classrooms;
- Hands-on sessions exploring the potential of technology to enhance learning, including blogs, wikis, social networks, virtual classes and multi-user virtual environments such as Second Life;
- Implementation strategy discussions with educational leaders who have implemented successful 1:1 programs;
- Role-alike sessions for individuals to share ideas across schools;
- Working sessions for schools teams with consultations with advisors;
- Sharing of district programs, resources, and lessons learned.
